PA Fill Management Policy Changes

Pennsylvania Regulatory Update – Effective January 1, 2020, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection’s Management of Fill Policy was updated and includes several important changes.  Most significantly, the updated Policy promulgates new standards which will need to be considered when determining if fill materials qualify as either clean or regulated.  The changes to the Management of Fill Policy could have important impacts on curFillPicrent and future projects and should be reviewed to ensure continued compliance.  If you have questions about the updated Fill Policy and how it might affect your Pennsylvania project, the team of geologists and environmental scientists at AMO are happy to help navigate your project through the policy changes.  Please feel free to reach out to Guy Sheets for more information (gsheets@amoed.com).

Incredible Climbing Milestone Reached

Khumbu Valley, Nepal – On November 7, 2019, AMO Environmental Scientist James Bedison reached the summit of Ama Dablam (22,494’ / 6856m), which is located in the Mt. Everest Region of the Himalayan Range.  Following years of preparation, months of training, and weeks of acclimatization, James and an international team of climbers and Sherpa safely summited and descended this iconic Himalayan peak.  For James, this was the culmination of a decade’s-long goal to test his mettle on the steep, difficult, and exposed Southwest Ridge route (Grade VI, Alpine 6, 5.8).  “I’ve been looking at this peak for a long time and never thought I would have the opportunity to climb it.  To find myself on the summit surrounded by the tallest mountains in the world and a great team of climbers was truly an inspiring experiencJamesSummitPice,” said James.

Joining an expedition to climb high-altitude peaks in the Himalaya requires a strong personal commitment to training and preparation, but it wouldn’t have been possible without the support of friends, family, and coworkers.  “The encouragement I received along the way was such an important part of making this climb possible for me.  I’m extremely grateful to everyone who helped me accomplish this goal.”  As for climbing Ama Dablam, James described it as one of the hardest things he’s ever done.  He credits the strength and kindness of the Sherpa on the team along with his previous experience on mountains like Mt. Rainier, Mt. McKinley (Denali), and Huayna Potosí for his success on the mountain.  “It was an amazing experience and I’m looking forward to new adventures in the mountains soon.”

AMO Welcomes Greg Firely to the Team!

Jay Ash, co-founder and President of AMO, welcomes Greg Firely:

“We are thrilled to welcome Greg Firely as a Senior Project Manager to the AMO team. Greg adds yet another dimension, helping our clients to identify and successfully file for and obtain environmental grants. The grants are filed through state and federal agencies to investigate and remediate brownfield sites. Over his last ten years, Greg has helped clients to obtain over $10,000,000.00 in grants.  An example of putting this grant money to work, includes  creation of 40 acres of open space, hundreds of new homes, space for offices and light industrial uses, and a retail center that could become the new town center, in Taylor Borough, Pennsylvania. The borough estimates redevelopment of the entire site, once complete, could generate annual revenue of up to $3 million, and more than 250 jobs for the region – serving as a national model for future brownfield/grayfield projects.

Greg’s experience with brownfield site investigation and remediation compliments our team.  His experience writing and managing brownfields grants adds to our team!”

Grant Writing & Management – Finding Money for Your Projects!

Grants are available through state and federal programs to address the redevelopment and reuse of Brownfield properties.  These grants are not just available to local governments.  Redevelopment authorities, nonprofit organizations, private land developers, and private companies are also eligible when redeveloping vacant industrial or commercial sites.

AMO has an expert Grants Writing and Management Team to assist in accessing these funding sources for myriad of site redevelopment and environmental assessment and remediation projects.  Many of the grant funds are geared towards brownfields redevelopment.

A Brownfield site is defined as real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of hazardous substances, pollutants, contaminants, controlled substances, petroleum, or petroleum products, or is mine-scarred land.

Activities that may be funded through these programs include, but are not limited to:

  • Environmental Assessments
  • Environmental Cleanups
  • Site Design/Planning
  • Site Clearing/Demolition
  • Infrastructure Design
  • Infrastructure Construction

Available funding varies from up to $200,000 for environmental assessment, to $1 million for remediation and infrastructure design and construction.

Since 2006, AMO Personnel have directly leveraged or assisted in leveraging over $10 million in grant funding for clients. This work includes managing the grant funds after they have been awarded to ensure compliance. Many of the projects we have worked on have received several grants to carry a project site from the initial assessment phase to cleanup and redevelopment.

Contact Greg Firely of AMO to see how we can leverage our experience with grant assistance to help you improve your brownfields.
